சர்வதேச கிரிக்கெட் போட்டிகளில் இருந்து ஓய்வு அறிவிப்பை தோனி வெளியிட்டு உள்ள நிலையில் பல்வேறு தரப்பினரும் அவருக்கு புகழாரம் சூட்டி உள்ளனர். மத்திய உள்துறை அமைச்சர் அமித்ஷா விடுத்துள்ள ட்விட்டர் பதிவில், இந்திய கிரிக்கெட்டில் தோனியின் ஈடு இணையற்ற பங்களிப்புக்காக, உலகெங்கிலும் உள்ள மில்லியன் கணக்கான அவரது கிரிக்கெட் ரசிகர்களுக்கு நன்றி தெரிவித்துக் கொள்வதாகக் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார்.
அடுத்து வரும் காலங்களில் இந்திய கிரிக்கெட்டை வலுப்படுத்த அவர் தொடர்ந்து பங்களிப்பார் என்று நம்புவதாகவும், உலக கிரிக்கெட் இனி ஹெலிகாப்டர் ஷாட்டுகளை இழக்கும் என்றும் அமித்ஷா குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார்.
கிரிக்கெட் ஜாம்பவான் சச்சின் தெண்டுல்கர் விடுத்துள்ள பதிவில், 2011 உலகக் கோப்பை கிரிக்கெட் தொடரில் தோனியுடன் இணைந்து விளையாடி கோப்பையை கைப்பற்றியது தன் வாழ்நாளில் மறக்க முடியாத சிறந்த தருணமாகும் எனக் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார். மேலும் இந்திய கிரிக்கெட்டில் தோனியில் பங்களிப்பு மகத்தானது என்றும் அவர் ட்விட்டரில் தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.
இதேபோல் பிசிசிஐயின் தலைவரும், முன்னாள் இந்திய அணியின் கேப்டனுமான சவ்ரவ் கங்குலி விடுத்துள்ள பதிவில், தோனியின் ஒருநாள் கிரிக்கெட்டில் பேட்டிங் செய்வது உலகத்தை எழுந்து நிற்கச் செய்துவிடும் என்று குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார். தோனியின் ஓய்வு அறிவிப்பு ஒரு சகாப்தத்தின் முடிவு என்று கங்குலி தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.
